2 Participants At General Electric’s ECOmagination Challenge Propose Solar CPV/Wind Turbine Combo

Together with a team from the Netherlands, a wind turbine that fits on the ridge of gable roofs was developed. The turbine is normally placed over the full width of the roof and -as the diameter is only 22″ (45 cm)- it is aesthetically pleasing and not intrusive, while being very economical. They designed a grid /tied inverter, which additionally accepts solar CPV. Traditional technologies (both vertical and horizontal axis) turbines require at least a 10′ (3m) diameter turbine for the same output, are bulky (and aesthetically unacceptable) and difficult to mount on a residential roof.

The developers believe this is the first real venture to introduce residential wind energy and their team’s strategy is to get exemption for building permits and zoning requirements, considering the small impact on the construction of the building and acceptable aesthetics, which will even please the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) crowd. They recognize the strategic importance having contractors and architects on their side.

Shawn Buckley and his partners designed a solar CPV panel. Using Fresnel mirrors, the sunlight is concentrated on an amount of silicon that is just 5% of the silicon required by a solar PV panel with a similar output. As silicon is expensive and the Fresnel mirrors cheap – in particular in large volume – this is a technology that may well change the solar PV industry.

What makes Shawn’s system different is that in addition to delivering electricity, the module also captures solar heat that can potentially heat tap water. The solar CPV panel therefore doubles as a solar heater, while improving efficiency because of cooling. This clearly improves the savings offered by the solar PV concentrator.

Both designs are breakthrough approaches and during the GE ECOmagination Challenge they recognized each other’s strongholds. After some brainstorming weeks they came with the following concept, marrying their technologies in a very efficient manner: On top of the turbine, a custom solar PV concentrator is mounted replacing the cap that normally covers the turbine. This has a number of benefits:

1. Installation cost ishardly more than that of the wind turbine (or solar PV concentrator) alone.

2. Placing it on top of the roof guarantees unobstructed sunlight exposure to the solar concentrator, independent of the position of the roof.

3. Both systems share the inverter; a significant cost savings.

This is the link to the ECOMagination challenge: http://challenge.ecomagination.com/home/SmartWind-RidgeBlaster-18-kW-wind-turbin In Phase two of this contest, participants from all over the world share their best concepts on improving our energy future. Phase two of the ECOmagination Challenge focuses on “Powering Your Home”: and shows innovative ideas about capturing, managing, and using energy in the home and it is amazing that this generated more than 800 ideas. Although the competition closed 15 March 2011 the website is still active so if you are interested to see some of the innovative ideas you can still do that.

Power Electronics for Modern Wind Turbines

Power Electronics for Modern Wind Turbines

Wind energy is now the world’s fastest growing energy source. In the past 10 years, the global wind energy capacity has increased rapidly. The installed global wind power capacity has grown to 47.317 GW from about 3.5 GW in 1994. The global wind power industry installed 7976 MW in 2004, an increase in total installed generating capacity of 20%. The phenomenal growth in the wind energy industry can be attributed to the concerns to the environmental issues, and research and development of innovative cost-reducing technologies. Denmark is a leading producer of wind turbines in the world, with an almost 40% share of the total worldwide production. The wind energy industry is a giant contributor to the Danish economy. In Denmark, the 3117 MW (in 2004) wind power is supplied by approximately 5500 wind turbines. Individuals and cooperatives own around 80% of the capacity. Denmark will increase the percentage of energy produced from wind to 25% by 2008, and aims for a 50% wind share of energy production by 2025. Wind technology has improved significantly over the past two decades, and almost all of the aspects related to the wind energy technology are still under active research and development. However, this monograph will introduce some basics of the electrical and power electronic aspects involved with modern wind generation systems, including modern power electronics and converters, electric generation and conversion systems for both fixed speed and variable speed systems, control techniques for wind turbines, configurations of wind farms, and the issues of integrating wind turbines into power systems.

The Stochastic Power Production of Wind Turbines

The Stochastic Power Production of Wind Turbines

$52.48

This work shows a novel method to characterize the power performance of a wind turbine directly from fluctuating data. In particular, it shows how to evaluate the dynamic responses of the power performance system on fluctuating wind speeds in the range of seconds. The approach is based on the stochastic differential equations known as the Langevin equations of diffusive Markov processes, which decomposes the fluctuating power production of wind turbines into their deterministic relaxation and stochastic-force (noise) contains. The operated steady-states of the complex power production system of a wind turbine on turbulent winds can be now properly reconstructed. The method is universal and not only more accurate than the current standard procedure but it also allows a faster and robust estimation of wind turbine power curves. In addition, the stochastic power output of a wind turbine is analyzed in the response theory.

Energy: Wind: The History of Wind Energy, Electricity Generation from the Wind, Types of Wind Turbines, Wind Energy Potential,

$45.48

Since early recorded history, people have been harnessing the energy of the wind. In the United States in the late 19th century, settlers began using windmills to pump water for farms and ranches, and later, to generate electricity for homes and industry. Industrialism led to a gradual decline in the use of windmills. The steam engine replaced European water-pumping windmills, and in the 1930s, the Rural Electrification Administration’s programs brought inexpensive electric power to most rural areas in the US. However, industrialization also sparked the development of larger windmills, wind turbines, to generate electricity. After experiencing strong growth in the mid-1980s, the U.S. wind industry hit a plateau during the electricity restructuring period in the 1990s and then regained momentum in 1999. Industry growth has since responded positively to policy incentives. Although wind power currently provides only about 1% of U.S. electricity needs, it is growing more rapidly than any other energy source. Wind power has negligible fuel costs, but high capital costs. The estimated average cost per unit incorporates the cost of construction of the turbine and transmission facilities, borrowed funds, return to investors (including cost of risk), estimated annual production, and other components, averaged over the projected useful life of the equipment, which may be in excess of twenty years. Modern wind turbines fall into two basic groups: the horizontal-axis variety and the vertical-axis design. Utility-scale turbines range in size from 100 kilowatts to as large as several megawatts. Larger turbines are grouped together into wind farms which provide bulk power to the electrical grid. Single small turbines (below 100 kilowatts) are used for homes, telecommunications dishes, or water pumping. Small turbines are sometimes used in connection with diesel generators, batteries, and photovoltaic systems. These systems are called hybrid wind systems and are typically used in remote, off-grid locations where a connection to the utility grid is not available. A key challenge for wind energy is that electricity production depends on when winds blow rather than when consumers need power. Wind’s variability can create added expenses and complexity in balancing supply and demand on the grid. Recent studies imply that these integration costs do not become significant (5%-10% of wholesale prices) until wind turbines account for 15%-30% of the capacity in a given control area. Opposition to wind power arises for environmental, aesthetic, or aviation security reasons. New public-private partnerships have been established to address more comprehensively problems with avian (bird and bat) deaths resulting from wind farms. Some stakeholders oppose the construction of wind plants for visual reasons, especially in pristine or highly-valued areas. Wind technology has improved significantly over the past two decades, and wind energy has become increasingly

THE METHODOLOGY. In order to estimate the latent demand for aesthetic equipment on a worldwide basis, I used a multi-stage approach. Before applying the approach, one needs a basic theory from which such estimates are created. In this case, I heavily rely on the use of certain basic economic assumptions. In particular, there is an assumption governing the shape and type of aggregate latent demand functions. Latent demand functions relate the income of a country, city, state, household, or individual to realized consumption. Latent demand (often realized as consumption when an industry is efficient), at any level of the value chain, takes place if an equilibrium is realized. For firms to serve a market, they must perceive a latent demand and be able to serve that demand at a minimal return. The single most important variable determining consumption, assuming latent demand exists, is income (or other financial resources at higher levels of the value chain). Other factors that can pivot or shape demand curves include external or exogenous shocks (i.e. business cycles), and or changes in utility for the product in question.

Semi-Empirical Aeroacoustic Noise Prediction Code for Wind Turbines

Semi-Empirical Aeroacoustic Noise Prediction Code for Wind Turbines

$19.98

OCLC Number: 55966071 Excerpt: …Semi-Empirical Aeroacoustic Noise Prediction Code for Wind Turbines Introduction One of the most significant drivers for wind turbine design is the amount of acoustic noise that a turbine radiates. This issue is particularly important because turbines are placed closer to load centers, which typically have large population densities and restrictive noise ordinances. To date, the rotational speeds of most wind turbine designs have been limited by the acoustic emissions from the blades, for which the sound intensity is approximately proportional to the tip speed raised to the fifth power. Unfortunately, tip speed is also related to the cost effectiveness of the wind turbine design. Increasing the tip speed, even slightly, can have a dramatic effect on the amount of energy captured by a wind turbine and, hence, directly influences the cost of energy for a given design. Therefore, it is very important to be able to understand, model, and predict the aeroacoustic noise for a given turbine in the design process and to make design changes before prototypes are built and tested. The noise prediction subroutines written to interface with FAST 1 ] allow these predictions to be made. This report explains how the code was written, what validation against test data was performed, and how a user can implement the code to predict noise for any given turbine design. Aeroacoustic Noise Prediction Model The model developed for the prediction of aeroacoustic noise is based on six different noise sources that are assumed to independently generate their own noise signature. The assumption of independence is founded on the idea that the mechanisms for each noise source are fundamentally different from each other or occur in different locations along a turbine blade, such that they do not interfere with one another. These independent noise sources are superimposed to obtain the total noise spectra emitted from the wind turbine rotor. Five of the…

To satisfy the second condition of efficiency the water must leave the tank without velocity, and therefore its velocity of discharge through the nozzle should be equal, as it is in any case opposite, to the velocity of the nozzle itself. In order to acquire this velocity, N/2GH, relative to the orifice, the water must be discharged under a head H, so that the depth of water in the tank should, for satisfactory working, be H. The theoretical efficiency of this machine is perfect, so that, if there were no mechanical losses, the output would be the whole work done by the fall. The mechanical losses are, however, great. The depth of the rotating tank must be one half of the height of the fall, and its weight is therefore very great in comparison with the power developed. The only method of regulation is by a sluice gate, and whether the power or the speed of the machine is altered, a great loss of efficiency is the result. In spite of its disadvantages, Burdin’s turbine is worthy of study as representing the first conscious effort to produce an engine the importance of which the public are, even now, only beginning to realize. Scientific men had, however, appreciated the possibilities of such an engine to some extent, even before the appearance of this turbine. In 1823, the Societe d’En- couragement de Paris had offered a prize of 6,000 francs to the inventor of a water-wheel similar to those described by Beiidor, which should be of real commercial utility. For eleven years no inventor worthy of the honour made his appearance, and then, in 1834, the prize was awarded to M. Fourneyron, who produced a machine incomparably superior to any then existing. The design of this turbine has scarcely required modification to meet the exacting requirements of the present da…

Wind and Solar Power Systems: Design, Analysis, and Operation

$158.48

The search for clean, renewable energy sources has yielded enormous growth and new developments in these technologies in a few short years, driving down costs and encouraging utilities in many nations, both developed and developing, to add and expand wind and solar power capacity. The first, best-selling edition of Wind and Solar Power Systems provided the most complete and modern treatment of renewable energy. This second edition continues the tradition by offering updated and expanded coverage of this growing field. The book begins with individual sections devoted to wind power and solar photovoltaic technologies, their engineering fundamentals, conversion characteristics, operational considerations to maximize output, and emerging trends. The discussion of wind power includes the theory of induction machine performance and operation as well as generator speed control, while the solar PV section includes array design, environmental variables, and sun-tracking methods. This edition includes two chapters devoted to new and specialized technologies. The third section explores large-scale energy storage technologies, overall electrical system performance, and total plant economy while the final section explores ancillary power systems derived from the sun. Focusing on the complete system rather than on a single component, Wind and Solar Power Systems: Design, Analysis, and Operation, Second Edition offers the most comprehensive reference to all aspects of modern renewable energy systems.
